Next Home Game

Saturday 12th November Vs Carshalton

KO: 1.45pm

Norsemen Football Club extends a warm welcome today to Polytechnic Football Club.

After a disappointing couple of games at home to Old Owens and Broomfield we are looking today to build on an excellent extra time win in the AFA Cup last weekend at Old Hamptonians.

Polytechnic arrive today after a disappointing start to the season with six straight defeats in the league. However based on recent season form we cant underestimate a seasoned Division 1 team who have performed admirably in previous years. The last time the sides met in 2006 it was settled by a 20 yard screamer by Paul Amico that sent the Blue Giants into the cup final.

As mentioned above we go into today’s game buoyed by last weekend’s fantastic extra time win away from home to avenge last season’s loss to a good Old Hamptonian team. The Blue giants put in an extra shift whilst playing the last 20 minutes of extra time with 10 men due to the unfortunate injury to midfield dynamo Ross Coleman.

Enjoy the game.

The Last 5 Games…

Blue Giants 2 – 1 Old Hamptonians AET

After slow start and despite a penalty save the Blue Giants had to fight from 1-0 down to win in extra time with great finishes from Lungha and Alexander

Blue Giants 2 – Old Owens 3

A disappointing performance on Presidents day meant Old Owens walked away with a well deserved 3 points despite an early penalty to put the Blue Giants ahead.

Blue Giants 2 – Winchmore Hill 3

A frenetic finish to the game with 2 late goals from Winchmore undone some good early play from the Blue Giants that had put them 2-1 ahead with 20 minutes to play.

Blue Giants 3 – Old Wilsonians 1

Wilsonians dominated the first half but could only go in 1-1 at half time with the Blue Giants edgy the second half with fine finishes from MacAlister and Davies taking the points.

Blue Giant 0 – 2 Broomfield

A sucker punch 83rd minute goal from a long throw left the Blue Giants chasing the game with little time left only to expose ourselves to an injury time counter attack

Player Profile

Norsemen Turkish Delight Os looks back at his time with the club…

Favourite memory of playing for Norsemen? 2009-10 Season was one of few highlights but we went to EBOGS needing a win to have any chance of staying up. We won 3-1. I scored 2.

Best player and why?  The ‘triangle of trust’ – You know who you are.

Favourite club to play against? HSBC always seems to a favourite away ground of choice.

Best away trip for food? Really difficult one this as the food after football is hardly ‘A la carte’ (that means “according to the menu” in French if your reading this Macca) but anywhere that serves up a good pie is always nice. I think Carshalton is good for a pie so i’ll go with them.

Favourite old boy?  Very hard to pick one. I suppose John Bayer gave me my debut but it has to go to Barry Ayers…the favourite of all the Ayers may i add.

What’s the best goal you have scored for Norsemen?  Freekick away to EBOGS. We were losing 1-0 and needing a win to help in our survival battle. I stepped up to send a rocket into the top corner.

Favourite Norsemen of all time?  Ballers. I admire his courage despite his disability to continue playing.

Worst moment for Norsemen?  When Jim (the club physio) told me i was out for 16 weeks with a slight hamstring tear.

Favourite training memory?  There was a training session when it was raining really hard…i wasnt there but everyone goes on about it being the best session ever so im going to go with that aswell.

Best thing about being a Norsemen? The Lads!

Opposition View

Polytechnic Football Club, originally, Hanover United Football Club, formed in 1873 or 1875. It is believed to be the first football club to use United in its name. It played its home matches at the Limes, Barnes, London, moving to a ground near Chiswick railway station in 1906. The club is a full member of the Football Association, the Amateur Football Alliance and the Southern Amateur League. It was named “Polytechnic” after the former name of the current University of Westminster (The Royal Polytechnic Institution).

The club entered the FA Cup under the name Hanover United between 1879 and 1887 winning 3 matches and losing to famous clubs of the day, Upton Park, Clapham Rovers and Old Carthusians. Under the name Polytechnic Football Club, it entered intermittently, between 1892 and 1950. The finest hour was a 4-2 win over Luton Town in its first entrance under the new name. The FA Amateur Cup was also entered between 1895 and 1970.

Poly’s most famous player is Soccer AM co-host Max Rushden who currently plies his trade in the 4th team.

The Midfielder’s View

Ross Coleman

The season to date……If you ignore pre season, then we started extremely well. A draw against the league champions with only 10 men and then a win the next week. Most teams would have written Norsemen off before the beginning of the season, however 6 games in I think we have earnt some well earned respect in the top division. We have undoubtedly the best team spirit in the league and are willing to put our bodies on the line for this club. This alone will win us games this year. We have recruited some new faces this year, all of them fitting in nicely with the club ethics. Saying that I haven’t seen any of them performing their dance routines in the showers yet! We have suffered a couple of injuries, however we seem to have the cover to deal with these loses. I think the main difference about playing in the top division (from a midfielders point of view) is the substantial rise in quality of the oppositions midfield. There is so much more fitness and movement, so few mistakes made and just an all round air of quality. Having said that I think Norsemen have the personnel to compete with the best. It is a pleasure playing in the 1st Division and every win feels all the more sweeter.

I have a good feeling about this season for Norsemen.
