Next Home Game

Saturday 15th October Vs Old Owens

(Presidents Day)

Norsemen Football Club extends a warm welcome today to our close neighbours Broomfield Football Club. This will be the first meeting between the clubs in the league since the 2008-2009 season when Broomfield FC were successfully promoted to Division 1 of the SAL by winning the Second Division for the 3rd time in their history. More recent meetings include a 7-2 cup win for Broomfield during the 2009-10 season in which Broomfield ran out worthy winners on the day.

Today poses no less of a task for James Owen’s men and despite some early indifferent form from our visitors thus far the Blue Giants will need to be on top form.

As today will be the first home game of the season for Norsemen 1st team it is fitting to take this opportunity to thank the committee members who work tirelessly to run the football club as it is today. Thanks therefore go to Tony Gibbs, Richard Pett, Ian Charles, Andrew Elderton, Mike Pearl, Sara Paris, Mark Freedman, Lorraine Symes, Graham Lewis, Clive Berr, Danny Green, Ronnie Robinson and President Mike Denbigh.

Season to date…

The SALs fixture calendar drew up some tough early away trips for the Blue Giants that would see us meet the 2010/11 Champions on the opening day of the season.

Blue Giants 2

Nottsborough 2

A Lunghu special in the 85th minute grabbed a well deserved point after going 2-0 down after 25 minutes and playing 65 minutes with 10 men.

Blue Giants 2

Old Salesians 0

With the game well poised at 0-0 after 45 minutes a close range finish from Morais and a wonderful chip finish from Ferguson gave the Blue giants a well deserved win.

Blue Giants 2

Winchmore Hill 3

A frenetic finish to the game with 2 late goals from Winchmore undone some good early play from the Blue Giants that had put them 2-1 ahead with 20 minutes to play.

Blue Giants 3

Old Wilsonians 1

Wilsonians dominated the first half but could only go in 1-1 at half time with the Blue Giants edged the second half with fine finishes from MacAlister and Davies taking the points.

Player Profile

Each week we’ll dive into the minds of some of our favourite 1st team players. Our first edition spends time with clubs ever present left back Nick Murray. Nick starts his 8th season with the club and we look back on why he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else…

1.Favourite memory of playing for Norsemen?  Winning the league last year. Everything from the way we played throughout the season to the willy dance in the shower after the title was won, to beating Old Parks when everyone had a raging hangover on the last day of the season.

2. Best player and why?  Tajae – still haven’t seen a centre forward who can get the better of him.

3. Favourite club to play against?  HSBC – amazing pitch and always results in the Norsemen travel club getting on it.

4. Best away trip for food? Civil Service a couple of years ago. The served the nicest pies and they ran out just before Macca got one. Ahhhhhhhhh!

5. Favourite old boy?  It’s a 5 way tie between Radio for his passion for the club, Chunky for being a living legend, Forbes for his constant use of the club motto, Nigel for his foul mouth, and Barry for being more liked than Reggie.

6. What’s the best goal you have scored for Norsemen? My second goal away vs BB Eagles in about 2007. Tom Morgan swung a quick free kick in from the left and I met the ball with my massive head from 20 yards and sent it into the top corner.

7. Favourite Norsemen of all time? Tough one. I’m going for Tadd for his unrelenting enthusiasm. (Not because he’s captain, honest…)

8. Worst moment for Norsemen? Not getting promoted in my first season. Went into last game of the season knowing a win would send us up as champions, anything less and we wouldn’t go up. Drawing 1-1 away to Poly we pushed everyone forward and got caught on the break (Ballers lost his man) and lost 2-1 with the last kick of the game. We still out drank the oppo in the bar though.

9. Favourite training memory? The night it rained. Amazing.

10. Best thing about being a Norsemen? The banter with the lads.

Opposition View

Broomfield FC celebrates 100 years of 1st team football this season. Congratulations on a tremendous achievement as it is a testament to all those that have participated in the clubs progress down the years.

The clubs origins are symbolised in the club badge with the ancient entrance gate to Southgate Village which stood for many years adjacent to the Broomfield Estate where grew the flowering Broom shrub whose foliage is seen on the badge. The emblem of Middlesex county of course completed the badge designed at a time when people had intense loyalty to their county.

Broomfield 1st team affiliated to the AFA in 1926 and have been members of the SAL since 1958. Broomfield have won the SAL 1st Division on two occasions.

Season So Far…

Lge 24/09/11  West Wickham 2 – 0 Broomfield

Lge 01/10/11  Broomfield 1 – 5 Old Parkonians

The Gaffers View

Well where do I start. After last years epic season, we set about formulating our attack on the top division with our normal gusto and never say die attitude. Despite losing some fantastic players to exotic climbs. There was also new players who have been welcome additions to our motley crew: Mark, Ant and all the various jays have only served to strengthen our family of blue giants.

The league clearly wanted to see what we were made of and pitched us against the champions and then cup winners  in our first 2 games. A normal side would of been fazed by this. Not us, 4 points and 2 fantastic performances followed.

Once again team spirit, hard work and bucket loads of ability, have made sure we have set our stall out. The team have faced challenges, however they have responded in the fashion I have come to expect and love.

We are well aware that there are lots of good teams in this league and that we are continually striving to improve to remain amongst the elite. Needless to say I’m very pleased with our start and it’s a credit to all the men in the squad and their hard work on the training ground. Special mention to Phil Jackson for his continued work on a Tuesday, Saturday and all the other days in-between.

I know our phone bills are taking a hammering.
