Next Home Game
Saturday 29th October Vs Polytechnic
Norsemen Football Club extends a warm welcome today to Old Owens Football Club. This will be the first meeting between the clubs in the league since the 2004-2005 season when the Blue Giants were relegated to the second tier of southern amateur football.
Owens arrive in buoyant mood after a moral boosting cup win in which they knocked six past Old Esthamieans last weekend, the only team to have beaten Norsemen in the league last season. Having made an indifferent start to their league campaign with one win from four games, last weekends result proves that we will need to be at our very best to pick up all 3 points.
We arrive into the game having lost our first home league game of the season with two very late strikes from Broomfield to leave us empty handed in a game we perhaps deserved more. Despite the defeat the mood in the camp is still good as the team can take great credit from the opening 7 points from the early season exchanges.
Today the club also extends a warm welcome to all the Old Boys who will join club president Mike Denbigh for lunch before hopefully enjoying what promises to be a great game.

Season to date…
Blue Giants 2
Nottsborough 2
A Lunghu special in the 85th minute grabbed a well deserved point after going 2-0 down after 25 minutes and playing 65 minutes with 10 men.
Blue Giants 2
Old Salesians 0
With the game well poised at 0-0 after 45 minutes a close range finish from Morais and a wonderful chip finish from Ferguson gave the Blue giants a well deserved win.
Blue Giants 2
Winchmore Hill 3
A frenetic finish to the game with 2 late goals from Winchmore undone some good early play from the Blue Giants that had put them 2-1 ahead with 20 minutes to play.
Blue Giants 3
Old Wilsonians 1
Wilsonians dominated the first half but could only go in 1-1 at half time with the Blue Giants edged the second half with fine finishes from MacAlister and Davies taking the points.
Blue Giants 0 – 2 Broomfield
A sucker punch 83rd minute goal from a long throw left the Blue Giants chasing the game with little time left only to expose ourselves to an injury time counter attack.
Player Profile
A true Blue Giants legend Steven Ballinger this week speaks exclusively about why he loves Norsemen…
Favourite memory of playing for Norsemen? Playing football for my school in the morning. Going to the cafe for lunch. Turning up at Norsemen to play for the 6’s in the afternoon. Not paying subs and getting Graham Lewis & Phil Coulter to pay for all my beers in the club after the game!
Best player and why? Leroy. He eats goals for breakfast.
Favourite club to play against? HSBC. Great pitch. Good booze up. 3 points guaranteed!
Best away trip for food? Goat curry. Stationers Away. The only thing to look forward to for the visit there.
Favourite old boy? Home and away faithful, Barry Ayers.
What’s the best goal you have scored for Norsemen? The winner away at Winchmore Hill circa 2005. 3-2 Norsemen.
Favourite Norsemen of all time? Mike “Radio” Denbigh. Norsemen through and through. Even played on the day that his wife gave birth!
Worst moment for Norsemen? Relegation to Div 2
Favourite training memory? Reds are winning!
Best thing about being a Norsemen? Everything! The fans, the players, the club are all the best in the SAL.
Opposition View
Old Owens this year celebrates 120 years of amateur football having formed in 1891.
Owens today proudly boast seven teams having been elected into the Southern Amateur League in the 1996/97 season and subsequently achieved two promotions to reach Division One in 1999/00 season. In 2000/01 Owens 3rd XI secured the first SAL championship for the club and the following year the Senior Division One title was won by the 1st XI. Since then the club have remained in the top division to date. The W.E. Greenland Trophy arrived in for the first time 2002/03 with further successes in the Old Boys Cup in 2003/04 and 2004/05. The 2005/06 Season became the most successful in the clubs history with the 1st XI winning the SAL Senior division 1 and the Old Boys Cup whilst narrowly losing out to local rivals Winchmore Hill in the AFA Senior Cup.
The 2006/07 Season witnessed the arrival of Old Owens first ever AFA Cup. The 2007/08 season continued Owens recent successes with the 1st XI bringing home the AFA Middlesex/Essex Cup after 69 years
Last season the 1st XI lifted the AFA Greenland Cup for the second time.
The Captain’s View
Tadd Heath
Thankfully you don’t win points in pre season, otherwise our points return would have been disappointing to say the least. However, the long, hard pre season, cannot be underestimated when reflecting on our early season form. Having said that I am reluctant to heap praise on players and management with only 5 games gone. As after all it is only a decent start. What I cannot speak highly enough of though is the commitment and never say die attitude this squad has. The performances at Nottsborough on the open day especially epitomized this. In addition, most recently the away win at Wilsonians without three of our main stay players from last year emphasizes the depth of quality within our squad.
We should not need any added motivation today as we welcome very difficult opponents Old Owens.
We believe we belong in this division and we will work tirelessly to achieve our goals this season. Collectively we are striving to improve on each performance every week. Without dwelling on it, it must be said the disappointment at Winchmore Hill left a bitter taste, and is spurring us on.
On a final note, a massive thank you to the dedicated support we receive week in, week out. It is genuinely much appreciated.
